Travie McCoy Criticizes Billboard's Review of 'The Quilt'

The Review:
On 2006's "As Cruel As School Children," Gym Class Heroes' Travis McCoy's vice of choice was cocaine (hence "Viva La White Girl"). This time around on "The Quilt," due Sept. 9 via Decaydence/Fueled By Ramen, it's women.

The metaphorical lead single, "Cookie Jar," produced by and featuring The-Dream, and the Estelle-assisted "Innocent" ("I'm guilty 'til proven innocent," he raps about being unfaithful) are both about McCoy's cheating ways. On "Come Clean," he continues on about infidelity, rhyming, "Been cheating and this isn't easy for me because you've been so good to me."

But it's not all about disloyalty. On "Kissing Ears" and the Cool and Dre-produced "Live Forever," featuring Daryl Hall, McCoy leaves his playboy ways behind and opts for lust and love. On the Patrick Stump-produced "Catch Me If You Can" and the piano-laden "Like Father Like Son" ("Papa was a rolling stone / but I want to be on the cover of a Rolling Stone"), McCoy rhymes about his music success, while addressing the skeptics on the drum-heavy "Don't Tell Me It's Over."

Additionally, there are tinges of reggae on "Drunk Txt Romeo" and "Blinded by the Sun," both produced by Fall Out Boy's Stump. "Peace Sign / Index Now," featuring Busta Rhymes is a viral promotional track whose video was released today (July 18) online.

"As Cruel As School Children" reached No. 8 on Billboard's Top Rap Albums chart. The set has sold 519,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen Soundscan. The single "Cupid's Chokehold" climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

With my freeze ray...
In TV news, I finished watching Everwood last week. I'm glad I finally finished it, and let me say that the series finale made so much more sense this time around. I'd watched it when it first aired, but at the time I'd only seen the first season. I don't even remember if I'd seen all of first season at the time. I had so many questions like "IRV! No!" and "When Andy and Nina turn romantic?" Not to mention, "Who's Scott Wolf?" Hahaha, it's amazing what happens when you watch something from start to finish. Couldn't help feeling sorry for Stephanie, though - she's waiting around for Eprham, getting annoyed with how late he is and he's just kissing Amy. The least he could have done was ask Amy if she was sure she was ready, and when she said "Yeah, I'm definitely ready," then he could have responded with "Okay. Then there's something I have to go take care of." Hmm. Wonder where that came from.

I've now moved on to Mysterious Ways and prior to watching the pilot, I knew exactly one thing about the show: the male star. As in, I knew he was in it. Other than that, I knew nothing. But I'm really enjoying it. It's not an obsession; it doesn't seem like the type of show that lends itself to fandom or fanfic or anything, but it's a fun show. A little freaky, but definitely fun. And Declan is slowly winning my heart with his earnest ways.

I'm watching Dr. Horrible, and it's so good. There's lots of bits and pieces of the songs that remind me of other musicals. The biggest reminds-me-of is "Once More With Feeling" which makes sense because it's a Joss thing. There were bits that reminded me of Into the Woods, though I can't place which song. And then there's the one part in Act III (no spoilers!) where he sings "Arise and seize..." which I shouldn't have to say what it reminds me of. Hey, I just found a connection! Vinnie! And the Bad Horse guys who pop in reminded me of DHP's monologue on SNL. "And every time I sing a line, they sing it back annoyingly."

Heroes Fic Recs!
I come bearing Heroes Fic Recs! Usually I wait until I have more fics lined up before I rec, but these were just screaming REC ME REC ME REC ME and couldn't wait.

  • The End of the Beginning, Part 1 by [info]saestina. Spoilers for Heroes Season 3 Promos. Claire, Peter, Hiro, Sylar.

A possible beginning for Volume 3, in which our heroes' worlds are turned upside down and they must prevent the possibility of an even darker future. OMG. Dark, dark, dark, and complex and plotty and with a wonderful Claire voice. Just awesome.

  • Healing, Part 1 and Part 2 by [info]47_trek_47. Set after the Season 2 finale. Nathan/Peter/Claire. Mostly Claire/Peter, Nathan/Peter, Nathan and Claire. NC-17.

Summary: Maybe Claire can save them both.

I can't rec this fic enough. Amazing characterization of all 3 Petrellis and their relationships with each other. And Peter is just *broken* and Nathan is *Nathan* and Claire is finding new ways to connect to them both that are both joyful and heartbreaking. There are so many scenes in there that were on my personal wishlist for the show itself, and they're so well executed that I'm now kind of preparing myself to be disappointed by the actual canon. Hee.

One last note: the fic is NC-17. Now, to be 100% honest, I don't usually read porn or very explicit sex in fanfiction. But even if it's not your kind of thing, either, I still think you should check this fic out for the rest of it--the dialogue, the quieter moments of connection, because I promise you that you will cry. And laugh. And want to read it all over again.
